Zhou Xiaofeng
Zhou Xiaofeng was born in Beijing in June 1969 and graduated in 1992 from the Department of Chinese at Shandong University. She has successively served at China Children and Teenagers Publishing House, October Magazine and People’s Literature Magazine. She was transferred to the Beijing Writers Association in 2013 as a professional writer. She has won the Lu Xun Literature Award, Zhu Ziqing Literature Award, Feng Mu Literature Award, Bing Xin Prose Award, Zhuang Zhongwen Literature Award, People’s Literature Award, October Literature Award, Presentism Essay Award, Flower Land Literature Award, Chinese Literature Media Annual Essayist Award and more.
As the creative genius of the new prose movement, Zhou Xiaofeng, with her unique and highly-labeled language and writing style, seeks innovation, changes, and differences, and has opened up the boundaries of prose writing. She says: “I hope to bring dramatic elements, novel plots, poetic language and philosophical thinking into prose and try to conscientiously cross boundaries.” Her works also greatly express the charm and uniqueness of the text, with its all-encompassing experience, as well as the imagination and impact it brings, even going beyond pictures and images. Zhou Xiaofeng uses precise text to open up the appearance of her writing, talks about life experiences, discusses the core of human nature, and gives birth to philosophical reflections with philosophical thinking that are obvious and yet unfamiliar to modern people, with her own unique style and spirit.
The writing in Your Body is a Fairyland is a bold yet restricted expression of women’s experiences. It presents a relatively complete body and ethical world, and shows the loyalty and sharpness of an excellent essayist. Whale Singing is a Lu Xun Literature Award-winning work. The award-winning words read: “The whole work is from the lower ground, on the ground or in the water, sinking and feeling. The mark and experience of personal growth, observation and comprehension of the world, with delicate and concise expression of the colors, Zhou Xiaofeng’s thoughts are self-conscious and diligent, and she is highly commendable in maintaining her own alertness, prudence, and restraint in expression, and in Zhou Yan’s stylistic order, she is confidently digging deep into the depths of life. Her witty artistic skills of thinking and freedom have expanded the possibilities of prose writing.”
Like a Migratory Bird, Zhou Xiaofeng’s new 2017 prose work, focuses on complex topics such as domestic violence, memory, good and evil, the food chain, and migration. She uses her meticulous yet precise prose to explore how people live in the crowd and each person’s deeply held hidden spiritual secrets. Like a Migratory Bird has been recognized by professional fields and readers since its publication. It has won the “Sina Top 10 Books”, “The People’s 50 Favorite Books”,“Influential Book of the Year”,“Hillland Literature Award Annual Prose” and other awards. Among them, the article Leaving Songs won the No.1 spot on the annual non-fiction list of Harvest with its sharp text and its layered dissection that is calm and yet somewhat sentimental to Chinese intellectuals and the truth of our time. In the past two years, besides prose writing, Zhou Xiaofeng has also begun to try to create fairy tales. Her two works Little Wings and Starfish will be published in 2018.
